In December 2012, Professor Simon Billinge led the first materials science workshop of the recently formed Joint U.S.-Africa Materials Science Institute (JUAMI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (see our former newsflash for more details). As the research collaborations formed in Addis continue to flourish, we have been excited to see the media interest in the experiences that the more than 60 participants from Eastern Africa and the United States shared together at the workshop. Most recently, a news story about JUAMI appeared on the Columbia University Engineering Department home page (see here). Thanks to Holly Evarts for writing this nice article, and thanks to everyone at JUAMI for looking so good in the pictures! We look forward to continuing the JUAMI legacy with continued collaboration and future international workshops.
